Expats Connect on Belonging vs Fitting In (non-expats welcome)
March 29 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pmdonation-based
You may be wondering….
Why do I feel lonely in the crowd?
Do you like me because I try to be like you?
What happens if I disagree?
Join us for a cozy gathering with heart-to-heart sharing and useful learning ♥
Introverts, HSPs, non-expats are much welcome.
Are you an international in Rotterdam? Or are you Dutch and re-settling back in your home country?
You might have relocated here for your studies, work, loved one(s), your safety, or whatever reason.
We invite you to our safe space to share your experience and connect with others in a similar (re-)adaptation process. We listen to each other without judgement and everyone is welcome to share their story. You’ll walk out of this meeting feeling empowered to create more meaningful memories on your journey.
Our past themes have included:
– What are the ‘ingredients’ for friendship?
– What are your experiences navigating changes in your life?
– How do you experience dating & relationship cross-culture?
Facilitated by Irene Anggreeni, a fellow international from Indonesia and psychotherapist/wellbeing coach.
NOTE: while some participants have experienced the sharing as therapeutic, this gathering is not a therapy space.
Date: Sunday, 29 March 2020
Time: 16:30 (walk-in 16:00)
Venue: CW de Banier, Banierstraat 2a Rotterdam
Recommended donation: € 10,- incl. tea/coffee, snacks, use of the space, materials, my preparation & facilitation.
You are heartily welcome to bring extra snacks, homemade or bought, to share with us. Or bring a friend.
How was Expats Connect born?
Having been an organiser on Meetup and InterNations, I’ve realised most of social events are catered towards the more extroverted folks among us. I was missing a social space for introverts, HSPs and people who prefer to have a deeper conversation and connection. In a calm, cozy place where we don’t need to strain our voice. So I approached Adem Inn for hosting us, and voila we have had our first official gatherings in their lovely café. Unfortunately though, Adem Inn is closed by the end of 2019. Our gatherings, however, will continue in other venues where we feel resonance with our mission.
Why do we need this kind of gathering?
I’ve written about it in this LinkedIn article on friendship as adults. So many of us, expats, internationals, but also people who’ve been living here a while, recognise the struggle of loneliness. Our friends come and go, or move on to a different life phase. Or we ourselves have changed in our interests or values, and want to build new friendships to nurture them. We have our social lives, but not necessarily our emotional support network. To meet friends we can go far with, is why this gathering exists.
Can you host this kind of gathering in my city/neighbourhood/company/community?
Great that you have this thought! You may have seen people around you needing this kind of facilitation to break isolation and feel more belonging with each other. I love to help you be that community builder yourself! It’d be great if you experience this gathering yourself before we have a chat about it.
